Waiver Wire 101: How to Win on Waivers Every Week

Basics6 min read

What Is the Waiver Wire?

The waiver wire is the pool of NFL players not currently rostered by anyone in your fantasy league. Any of them can be added to your team — but in most leagues, there's a process that governs who gets priority access.

Priority Waivers vs. FAAB

Most leagues use one of two waiver systems. Priority waivers give claim order based on reverse standings — the worst team in the league has first pick of unclaimed players. After a claim is processed, the team drops to last in priority order. This system self-corrects over time but creates frustrating situations when a good team gets stuck with low priority late in the season.

FAAB (Free Agent Acquisition Budget) gives every team a fixed dollar amount — typically $100 or $1,000 — to bid on players. Each week, teams submit blind bids. The highest bid wins the player and loses that amount from their budget. FAAB rewards research and calibration over blind luck.

When Do Claims Process?

In most ESPN and Sleeper leagues, waiver claims process on Wednesday morning, giving managers roughly 48–72 hours after Sunday's games to submit claims. Free agents — players who have cleared waivers — can be added at any time without a claim.

  • Wednesday morning: weekly waiver claims process (most leagues)
  • Within 24–48 hours of being dropped: players released by other teams go onto waivers temporarily
  • Free agents: anyone not on waivers can be added at any time — first come, first served

What Makes a Good Waiver Pickup?

  • A clear path to usage: injury to a starter, depth chart promotion, or expanded target share
  • High floor: target-heavy roles or bellcow backfields are more reliable than upside plays
  • Available at the right time: a player whose role just got clarified is better than one whose situation is still uncertain
  • Manageable FAAB cost: don't overbid on speculation — save budget for certainty
💡 Tip:The best time to check the waiver wire is right after an injury is reported — not the night before your deadline. Early movers get the best players before ownership percentages climb and competition increases.
